Description:An excellent portrait pastel on artist's paper, signed "LS" and dating circa 19th Century. Framed - approx 32 X 25 inches (81.28 X 63.5cm).This is an excellent English School pastel dating from the Victorian period. The portrait depicts a stunning study of a beautiful young woman named as Hilda Gertrude Close (later Courthope). On a mottle ground, this elegant young woman wears a stunning green bodice dress with puff sleeves and a fashionable high collar decorated with pearls. She has a fair complexion and deep glue eyes, the light capturing her flushed cheeks. Her brown wavy hair is swept up and held by a yellow rose. The young society woman, probably aged around 18, was later to marry George Loyd Courthope, 1st Baron Courthope, she had two daughters and died in 1940 (see below). The painting bears an inscribed label, verso, "Pastel Portrait of Hilda G. Close (daughter of Colonel H.P. Close) by Leon Spronck, Esquire - December 1889 - To be given to her after death of both her parents - H.P. Close". "Hilda Gertrude, only daughter of Major General Henry Pelham Close - married 1899 George Loyd Courthope". Provenance:- George Loyd Courthope, 1st Baron Courthope PC, MC (12 June 1877 -2 September 1955), known as Sir George Courthope, Bt, from 1925 to 1945, was a British Conservative Party politician. He was also a Colonel in the 5th Battalion of the Royal Sussex Regiment (Territorial Army) and fought in the First World War, where he was wounded, mentioned in despatches and awarded the Military Cross. Courthope was created a Baronet, of Whiligh in the County of Sussex, in 1925, and in 1945 he was raised to the peerage as Baron Courthope, of Whiligh in the County of Sussex. Lord Courthope married firstly Hilda Gertrude, daughter of Major-General Henry Pelham Close, in 1899. They had two daughters. After her death in 1940 he married secondly Margaret, daughter of Frederick Barry, in 1944. Lord Courthope died in September 1955, aged 78. As he had no male issue the baronetcy and barony became extinct.The work is signed "LS" lower right for "Leon Spronck". Date:The pastel probably dates to around 19th Century. Artist Biography: Leon Spronck (1877 - 1940) - Society portrait artist. Framing:Later classic scroll and floral moulded Gesso work. Finish: Gilt. Condition:The pastel is in excellent condition for its age. The artist's paper has discoloured a little and has markinigs around the border where it has previously been mounted and framed. The frame has a rew cracks andm inor pieces of moulding missing, consistent with age and this type of delicate material. Description. On offer here is a wonderful pastel picture of ernest broadbent dating from the mid 20th century circa 1974.

Here we have a wonderful kitsch picture of the organist Ernest Broadbent who played the world famous Wurlitzer at Blackpool Tower in the 1970's. Here he is sat at the large organ. Presumably this portrait was taken from a photo and then given to the musician at a later date. The plaque at the bottom on the frame says "Presented to Ernest Broadbent, December 1974". A lovely piece in a good solid frame. Signed to bottom left D. Humphrey 74.

Condition.

In good condition commensurate with age there are some minor knocks and nicks to the frame, some sign of old inert wormhole to frame top, no foxing to glaze, the image itself undamaged and in good condition, still in same frame from first use. Ready to hang.

The landscape depicts a decorative garden scene titled, verso, "Autumn Garden". A stone statue sits on the patio leading to the lawned ares where mature treees grow, leaves falling to the floor turning the golden shades of autum, a cold clouded sky above.The work is signed "MR" lower right for "Margaret Ricketts".
