The drawing is of a Guinea Fowl and framed measures 31" x 26". The actual drawing itself measures 23" x 18" approx. The frame is solid wood and has been painted black and in our opinion would require a fresh coat of paint as it has storage marks to it.

The drawing shows little signs of age with only the very slightest discolourisation apparent and no loss in the vibrancy of the pen and ink.

About The artist:

A graduate of Central St Martin’s School of Art, Lucy studied under the instruction of renowned foundry man David Reid who, in his inimitable way, taught her skills in all areas of the foundry. Lucy is an internationally recognised artist, not only for her outstanding and immediately recognisable animal bronzes, but also for her large scale charcoal drawings. Her work is in several private collections in Britain and abroad. She lives and works on the North Norfolk coast in the UK.

“I choose to model my sculptures in wax, which captures beautifully the textures of feathers, fur and hide. I love to see my fingerprints on the surface of the finished bronze. I find the ancient alchemy of producing a bronze a mysterious and thrilling process.

Drawing for me is a passion – I adore drawing – I am happiest with a stick of compressed charcoal and a roll of Fabriano. Halfway into a piece of work I can completely lose myself and begin to feel the animal coming alive. I aim to capture a moment of spirit and energy, the essence of that animal, its character, weight, texture, attitude and presence.

Gathering source material at the outset of an idea is something I relish and is essential in understanding the animal; visiting smallholdings, meeting and talking to farmers, breeders and zoo keepers up and down the country. Every animal I produce I have met – with one or two exceptions – the dodo skeleton in the bowels of the Natural History Museum was useful to measure proportions.

I have been influenced by a wide range of people: Picasso; Dürer; Paula Rego; Elizabeth Frink; Claes Oldenburg; Adam Ant; Liberace; Hillaire Belloc; Christian Lacroix; Roberto Cavalli and Alexander Mcqueen are all people whose style and wit I admire, and growing up surrounded by the architecture of Cambridge helped me develop my appreciation of all things beautiful and uplifting.”

FRANK RICHARDS RBA (1863-1935) A series of pen, ink and wash studies of various professions. Cut out and laid on board. Monogrammed F.R. Foxing as shown. I recently had the great fortune of acquiring a quantity of work by Frank Richards. Unbelievably, it was rescued from a skip. Most of the work is signed, much is dated, and all of it is undoubtedly by Richard?s hand. Despite a neat handwriting, I have great difficulty deciphering some of his inscriptions. At one point these items seem to have been in a garage sale, as most have prices hand written on the back (in old money). Despite the chequered history, almost everything is in superb condition. I think most of it has been in a drawer or folio from new. Richards used high quality media and colours are excellent. There are a variety of styles, sizes and media. It will take me some time to get all of it catalogued and photographed. Richards was born in Birmingham where he studied at the School of Art and where in 1884 he was elected a member of the Birmingham Society of Artists. Having travelled in Europe he became a great advocate of plein air painting and it was natural that he should gravitate to the French inspired group of artists working in Cornwall and centred around the school established by Stanhope Forbes in Newlyn. Richards became a regular visitor to Newlyn where he joined a group of his contemporary Birmingham artists that included Edwin Harris and Walter Langley.

Richards held a solo exhibition at Dowdeswell Gallery, London in 1894, was a regular exhibitor in Newlyn and St Ives and also contributed to the Newlyn School exhibitions at the Castle Galleries, Nottingham and Dowdeswell Gallery. We are a father and son team. Bill, the father, is based near Bradford on Avon and sources art and antiques in this affluent area. Dan is based in Newbury and covers the area West of London.We are committed to selling good quality art and antiques at a fair price. Most of our customers are dealers, and about half our sales go overseas. Although we welcome retail customers, our main business is repeat sales to the trade. We specialize in taking high quality images and promise fair and accurate descriptions to the best of our ability.

Images: Whenever possible, we use scans as we find they are the most accurate representation of the actual appearance of the item. For larger items, we supplement the scans with photographs.

A word about size: For pictures height is given before width. If only one size is given, it is the size of the actual picture without any border, mount or frame. All measurements are approximate to the nearest cm or so.

And a word about descriptions: we make mistakes; everyone does. If you catch an error, please let us know so we can change the listing.
