19th Century Pencil Drawing of a Horse

19th Century pencil drawing of a horse in fine condition with some foxing. Signed lower left corner indistinctly. Size: 12 x 12cm (4.7" x 4.7") Sheet: 22 x 18cm (8.7" x 7.1")

Click an image below to see it full-size

We have recently changed our name from Bills Pics to Sulis Fine Art in conjuction with the launch of our website with the same name. Look us up on Google!

Please pay promptly. We prefer PayPal. If you pay by personal cheque, there will be a delay of about two weeks before your goods can be despatched so do not use this option if you are in any hurry at all. Similarly, eCheques take forever to clear, so be prepared for a long wait. If you are collecting in person, then cash on collection would be preferred. International payments must be PayPal only. No other form of payment can be accepted.

For overseas shipping, if the postage charge says £999.99, please contact us for a correct courier shipping cost for your country

Ignore what it says anywhere else on this listing. Full insurance is included in the shipping charge. There is a glitch in the program which might cause it to say insurance not offered.

Shipping to Northern Ireland, Offshore Islands, Channel Islands and some remote areas costs more in many cases. Please do not pay until you receive an invoicee. If in doubt, please enquire before bidding. We will always combine shipping where possible. There are usually substantial discounts for combined shipping. Sometimes for international shipping if combining the shipping will bring the weight over 2 kilograms then there is no savings. Please wait for or request an invoice if you buy more than one item.

95% of framed pictures (except the very small ones) are now being sent out in custom made cartons. These are extremely sturdy telescopic cartons that provide a level of protection virtually as good as a wooden crate. These are far superior to recycled cartons which usually have been weakened by prior use. The cost for each of these cartons is exactly £4.00 which must be passed on to the buyer. Since we have been using these cartons, there have been essentially no reports of damage in transit. From time to time we do stumble across a previously used carton which is as good as ours, and on occassions we do use them. For overseas shipments we often use alternative packing means to keep the weight under 2kg. Usually this means about 20 layers of bubble wrap (which is very light) and very little cardboard.

Full insurance is included in the postage and packing charge. No carrier will insure against damage to artwork or antiques so we provide this insurance ourselves. There is a small amount included in the shipping charge for this.

Glass will be removed from all overseas shipments and all pieces of glass with either dimension greater than 45cm will be removed from UK shipments. Despite best packing efforts, the carriers manage to break larger pieces of glass with frustrating regularity. When we do ship small pictures with glass, we will often tape the glass with masking tape. If the glass seems particularly vulnerable, we will re-arrange the picture so the the backing board is between the glass and the painting, so that even if the glass breaks it will be unlikely to damage the painting. In this case it will be necessary to put the painting back in the proper position when it arrives. Unframed pictures will be sent rolled in a postal tube if appropriate.

We offer a money back no quibble guarantee. Please contact us within 7 days for return authorization. When the item is received within a further 7 days in the same condition as when it left arrived, your payment price will be refunded in the same manner as which it was paid. Carriage charges are not normally refundable unless fairness dictates otherwise. We try to be as reasonable as possible.

Everything we sell is used, and often is very old. In almost every case there will be damage of some kind, and usually some form of restoration and repair. This is considered normal with antique objects. We attempt to mention significant problems, and always include excellent images. You should rely upon your inspection of the images. No representations are implied about mounts and frames, unless specifically stated, and then they are just opinion. Authorship is similarly a matter of opinion. In the absence of a provenance, even a signed picture may be a forgery. Unless we have reason to suspect a forgery, which we will then mention, please assume that authorship is a matter of opinion. The exception would be if the listing says "guaranteed genuine"

Feedback: We use an automated feedback system. As soon as you leave positive feedback, you will receive positive feedback from us

We are a father and son team. Bill, the father, is based near Bradford on Avon and sources art and antiques in this affluent area. Dan is based in Newbury and covers the area West of London. We are committed to selling good quality art and antiques at a fair price. Most of our customers are dealers, and about half our sales go overseas. Although we welcome retail customers, our main business is repeat sales to the trade. We specialize in taking high quality images and promise fair and accurate descriptions to the best of our ability.

Images: Whenever possible, we use scans as we find they are the most accurate representation of the actual appearance of the item. For larger items, we supplement the scans with photographs.

A word about size: For pictures height is given before width. If only one size is given, it is the size of the actual picture without any border, mount or frame. All measurements are approximate to the nearest cm or so.

And a word about descriptions: we make mistakes; everyone does. If you catch an error, please let us know so we can change the listing.

19th Century Pencil Drawing of House by Waterside - after A. I. Raphael

19th Century pencil drawing of a house by waterside. This is similar to another drawing we sold which was inscribed A. I. Raphael del c1838. In generally good condition apart from slight graphite marks to top right (see photograph).Size: 18 x 22cm (7.1" x 8.7") Sheet: 23 x 29.5cm (9.1" x 11.6")

ORIG INK/PENCIL CARIACATURE SKETCHE FRENCH/BELGIAN SCHOOL WORKS ON PAPER UNSIGNED c1930s
An interesting work, characterisations in pencil, ink and coloured crayon of, we believe, Edwardian policemen – typically the type of hat and tunic worn, with lapel insignia. Either for a theatre costumier’, perhaps an animation or just an artist sketching for another work, the sheet is not signed. We have removed the backing to inspect, as the work is presented in a contemporary glazed frame. Some creasing to the pager, from the type of paper appears to date, c1920s or thereabouts. Is not English in our opinion, possibly French or Belgian – and labelled as French School in our inventory. Excellent quality, detailed characterisations which are very much alive, all of the same personality – some in plain black ink, others in pencil and others – the main drawing centre of the page - in brown crayon with black ink highlighting. Presented in good overall condition having been retained under glaze, please see the condition report following. Presented in a contemporary gilded frame, this picture looks fabulous displayed. Size, medium and condition: Size, viewable artwork within matt, 34 x 22cm (13.5 x 8.5 inches), frame 58 x 46cm (23 x 18 inches). Medium, Ink, crayon and pencil on artist’ sketchpad paper, taped to matt. Overall condition is very good for its age, without damage or previous restoration, good contrast and colourfast throughout, importantly no foxing; some creasing to the paper is noticed, especially the bottom right corner. Can either be left as it is, as clearly shows aging – or consideration should be given to mounting to card, to suit. The contemporary wooden frame shows light age related wear. Shipping costs: Weight is about 2kgs and with packaging 4kgs. Supplied complete to all UK addresses, we shall remove the work from its frame to all international destinations and the postal costs reflect this – if you would like the frame included, please request on checkout for shipping by courier to your country’ postcode/zipcode. Free UK-domestic shipping.
We have recently changed our name from Bills Pice to Sulis Fine Art in conjuction with the launch of our website with the same name.

Frank Richards RBA - Pencil Sketch Highlighted with Watercolour. Signed/ Dated

Frank Richards RBA - A pencil sketch of a man signed and dated 95. On very thin paper laid down on card. With a couple of touches of red watercolour. From a cache of Frank Richards paintings and drawings literally rescued from a skip. Most have a price on the back: anywhere from 6d up to 2/6, so these must have been in some type of car boot sale at one point, pre-decimalization. I show a photo of the back of one of the items which was used as a sign. Not every picture is signed, but they are all unquestionably by Richards hand.Size: 16 x 9cm (6.3" x 3.5")

1854 Pencil Drawing - Peterboro Family Crest

A fine pencil drawing of the Peterboro coat of arms family crest. Signed lower right indistinctly and dated June 1854. In very good condition with usual signs of age and slight adhesive marks to margins. Motto:Nec.Placida.Contenta.Quieta.Est which is a quotation from Vergil's Aeneid, book 9, line 187 which reads : "mens agitat mihi nec placida contenta quieta est" meaning literally : "My mind urges me and it is neither placid nor satisfied and quiet".It is Nisus, a young warrior eager for glory and adventure, who says the above words when he wants to enter the enemy's encampment with his friend Euryalus and kill many warriors who lie in a drunken sleep. Size: 16 x 21cm (6.3" x 8.3") Sheet: 23 x 28cm (9.1" x 11")

Click an image below to see it full-size

We have recently changed our name from Bills Pice to Sulis Fine Art in conjuction with the launch of our website with the same name.
