Description:A fine portrait sketch on artist's card dating circa early 20th Century, unframed - approx 6 X 6 inches (15.24 X 15.24cm).This is a fine English School sketch dating from the Edwardian period. The portrait depicts a fine pencil sketch titled "The Late Phil May". Phil May - Brittish Illustrator (1864 - 1903) - Born in Leeds, May was forced to earn his living from an early age following the death of his father. After a period of extreme poverty, often sleeping on the streets, May was finally employed as a theatrical costumier, where he also drew posters and cartoons. After a short period in Australia he returned to London, and went on to work for Punch, and drew many political portraits. He was rarely overly political, but due to his background, had a great sympathy for the poor. Date:The sketch dates post 1903. Artist Biography: R. Hibbert - The illustration formed part of an Album by the artist consisting various sketches, cartoons, caricatures and studies, some of theatrical interest, many signed with initials, in mediums of watercolour, pencil and pen and ink dating circa 1880 - 1900. Framing: None Condition:The sketch is in fairly good condition although does have signs of foxing, the artist's paper having mellowed with age.
