Biography

Tim was born in Northumberland in 1958, educated at Sedbergh and later graduated from Wimbledon School of Art with an honours degree in Theatre Design. Initially employed by a theatre company designing sets and arranging special effects, and later working in a variety of galleries, Tim’s early career offered ample opportunity for him to indulge his two main interests - painting, and the observation of human behaviour!

Tim’s celebrated style has a broad appeal. His work has been displayed nationally and internationally for several years and he has been officially named as the Harrods Picture Gallery’s most popular artist. His success has led to commissions for a number of corporations, top flight restaurants (including Gary Rhodes’ Greenhouse) and bars, card collections and of course individual collectors. 

When asked to describe his artistic style, Tim points the same ruthless spotlight at himself as he does at his subjects, saying simply that “…a wry observation of life and an unwillingness to take anything seriously” more or less sums up his work, typically forgetting to mention the imagination and artistry that characterises each of his images.

Tim’s overwhelming rise in popularity was reflected when he scooped the Fine Art Trade Guild’s Best Selling Original Print Artist award in May 2001."I am fascinated by the incredible diversity of life… and am constantly inspired by the fact that it always seems a whisker away from farce.”

Finishing Touches

Have you recently moved house, extended your home, redecorated, decluttered or simply recognised that your tastes have changed. If so you will face the challenge of selecting a new piece (s) of art for your home.

The simple rule is less is good. Do not try to put up all the paintings that you have collected. Interior design trends change as do your tastes and your budget.

Most living spaces will be decorated in light colours and therefore you will have much more choice of which style will suit you and your home. Ideally a colour within the painting will match your curtains or glassware allowing the room to look co-ordinated. 

You will not just be matching a painting but making sure that the frame fits in. For example if you have a large flat screen television in a silver frame, then a single large painting with a silver frame could refocus the room.

Match the style of paintings within a room along with the frames. Ideally have a couple of paintings by the same artist.

Paintings can alter depending on the light they receive; those painted in acrylic have the ability to pick up different shades of colour. This does not mean you have to rewire the house to put in spot lights or pelmet lights over the painting. Simply consider how the light changes in the room during the day or place a lamp on a timer below the painting. The effect can be stunning.

Follow these simple rules:

·        Fewer paintings make the room look uncluttered.

·        One or two large paintings can make a bigger impact than lots of small ones.

·        Match a colour from the painting with curtains, cushions, glassware, candles or flowers.

·        Have paintings from the same artist or the same style in a room.

·        Consider light. Use it to enhance your painting but don’t place in direct sunlight.

Always buy a painting because you love it and not because you think it will increase in value. A painting should make you have a reaction every time you see it so it is no good putting something on your wall which make you think “Why did I buy that?” every time you walk in the room.

Derek Windsor

Derek gained his B.A. honours’ degree at Farnham Art College in 1993. He quickly began a diverse career in animated film making where he won an international prize. After illustrating and animating in London he moved into computer game design. Success was to follow him at Codemasters Ltd with a number one hit game and other AAA publications for the Sony Play Station. He then travelled extensively around the world for a number of years. Derek wanted to always be free to work on a broad variety of projects and found painting to be a favourite medium. He has been established now for over seven years as a painter with exhibitions locally and in Brecon, where his paintings have covered a number of subjects from Jazz to Park Life. His latest achievement was setting up the Maerdy Arts Society and organizing demonstrations and exhibitions within the Rhondda Valleys.
