A QUIET CORNER OF OLD LINCOLN

Born in Darwen, Lancashire 1924.

School :- Hull’s Malet Lambeth School, encouraged to visit the docks and draw ships from life by Gussie Cooper.

Studied at School of Architecture , Hull University.

RAF pilot during the 2nd world war.

In later life he would make radio controlled aircraft.

Principle Architect Hull City Architects Department.  

Married to Stella Smale for 50 years, 1 son (artist)` 3 daughters. Following her death

Married artist Sonya Josephine Raven-Ainly 2003

Died peacefully at home 24th June 2011 in the East Riding of Yorkshire.

Many private and corporate collections both home and abroad.

This is framed ink painting of two pheasants on a bark background.  The picture is quite old, the date and auther is unknown to me, but may be hidden by the frame, which is not so old.  It is a wooden frame measuring 10 1/4" x 10 1/4" (approx 26 x 26 cm).  The pheasants have been painted/drawn in black ink then varnished onto the bark, with real grasses varnished on top of that.  The marks on the picture are the natural features of the bark, which I believe is birch.

This is a very old and unusual peice of art - completely unique.

Ideal for a collector of unusual art or people who like pictures of birds.

Reg Gammon was born in Petersfield, Hampshire in 1894. In 1918 Scottish etcher Muirhead Bone promoted his work and attempted to have him enroll at the Slade School but he declined as he had recently married. Gammon instead embarked on a career as a writer and illustrator working for 'Punch' and for cycling and motoring magazines.

At the end of the Second World War he returned to the Black Mountains in Wales and became a hill farmer. It was not until 1958 that Gammon decided to paint full time, he moved to Somerset and set up a studio in Cannington.His principal influence was the French post impressionist Paul Gauguin and this is evident in his choice of working people as principle subjects. He achieved considerable success and was a member of both the R.W.A. and the R.O.I. In 1990 he published his biography 'One Man's Furrow, 90 years of country living' which told the tale of a life interrupted by two world wars, and records the artist's impressions of a life and landscape that has now all but disappeared. The book is in three sections, reflecting life before, between and after the wars.He died in 1997 at 103, he continued painting almost right up to his death.

The painting is titled Old Quarry Near Wells.

Approximately 20 1/2" by 16" including the mount, the actual watercolour is approximately 15" by 10".
