English Sand Dunes

Modern British School Oil Painting on Board

Approximately 24 x 24 inches (61 x 61 cms)

An interesting painting depicting typical English sand dunes over which a figure can be seen running - their footprints leading back to the shore where the sea is still below a calm and darkening sky.

Oil on board bearing signature and date '79 to lower right, supplied unframed in very good condition.

Lewis Davis was a prolific artist and "inspirational" teacher of art who died in 2010 at the age of 71.  His most acclaimed work was the 52 paintings which illustrated scenes from Samuel Taylor Coleridge's The Rime of the Ancient Mariner - he was inspired by the Ancient Mariner because it was full of imagery and he was able to illustrate every verse.

Originally from Waltham Forest, Lewis retired to Cromer in Norfolk seven years before his death and continued to paint every day being inspired by the countryside and churches of the area.  He also decorated one of the Go Elephants exhibited in Norwich during the summer of 2008 with scenes from The Ancient Mariner and this subsequently achieved £3,800 when auctioned for charity.

Jessica has lived in South Devon since she was born in 1982, starting from a very young age art has held an unavoidable fascination for her.  Her grandfather, Maurice is also an artist.  At a young age they would sit down and he would teach her the basics, mostly drawing on paper but as she remembers they had a lot of fun sculpting with clay !  When she was a little older she loved to go to work with her dad Carl during weekends and school holidays, being a farrier he would travel all over the countryside giving her the perfect opportunity to study and draw at each stop.  Once she mastered drawing these beautiful animals, Jessica played around with colours in an attempt to stylize the pictures, 'I wanted to enhance their unique characteristics on my paper differently to any others'. By using a variation of colours and exaggerating certain features, she can now capture an energetic sprint, a moment of triumph or even a foul temper! Jessica is self taught and has had very successful exhibitions as well as prints, cards and gifts that are sold all over the country and abroad.

Oil painting of Street art seller at Notre Dame. Painted circa the Mid 20th century the work is beautifully executed by a good hand and signed Balmer, bottom right. It has been painted on board and sits in the period timber frame with minor age related wear.  The frame and painting would benefit from a light clean though it presents well as it is.

Painting measures 22cm x 27.5cm. Total frame size 29.5cm x 34.5cm x 3.5cm deep.

Possible Scene of Paris

A stunning, modern optical (Op Art) painting on canvas in acrylic from the mid 20th Century. Signed either O’hara/O’cara. Titled verso ‘Blue Filigree’. You can see from the photos it is an accomplished work by a good Op artist from a time when prominent artist were painting in this technique.

The painting is fairly large, measuring with the frame 106.5cm x 106.5cm x 3cm deep. Condition is good for the age, with a few light scratches and other minor marks. There was a line along the bottom of the canvas one inch into the painting from slight water damage which has been restored. The canvas lightly cleaned to remove the mark and the paint re-touched in a couple of areas using a paint match and dry brush.

The painting sits in a pine frame made for the work, with age related wear and a couple of small dinks to the edges. I have detailed in the additional photos the label verso and heightened the contrast so they can be read- Details the title of the piece and the artists name and London address. There is also the number 2 printed on another label. Possible an exhibition order number.

Due to the size of the work delivery to the UK only. It will have to be boxed in poly sheets with an outer layer for safe transit by courier so postage is £50. I would prefer collection as it will save you money and me two hours wrapping the work.
